Askennonia Senior Centre

About

Askennonia Senior Centre in Midland, Ontario serves as North Simcoe’s premier hub for healthy aging, offering a wide array of recreational, educational, and social programs tailored to adults aged 55 and over. Housed within the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre, Askennonia takes its name from the Wendat word for “peace, wholeness, and well-being,” reflecting its commitment to nurturing both body and mind. Throughout each week, members can choose from structured activities such as Tai Chi, contract bridge, and computer lessons, alongside drop-in options like badminton, table tennis, and creative writing. Signature offerings—ranging from arts and ukulele card programs to specialty workshops—ensure there’s always something new to explore, while regular bus trips and special events bring the wider community together.

More than just an activity centre, Askennonia fosters strong social connections and lifelong learning by welcoming both members and the public to participate in its programs. Membership is affordably priced at $55 per year (pro-rated after mid-August) and grants access to most of the more than fifty weekly card-style programs, with nominal fees for individual workshops and drop-in classes. Beyond its daily schedule, the centre hosts signature events—such as paint nights, fundraisers, and seasonal celebrations—that bring together residents and sponsors alike. By combining structured programming with a warm, inclusive atmosphere, Askennonia plays a vital role in supporting independence, friendship, and well-being for Midland’s 55+ community.
